Welcome to the Department of Marine Biology and Ecology (MBE) at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

martin grosell

We currently have 17 regular and emeritus faculty and 56 graduate students.  The faculty perform research in a diverse range of fields including physiology, genetics, genomics, proteomics, ecology, behavior, population dynamics, connectivity, toxicology and conservation science.

Our research takes us to coastal and oceanic sites near and far.  We study organisms from plankton to seabirds, seagrass to corals and minnows to marlin.  Our unique location right on the water means that students have easy access to nearby tropical and subtropical ecosystems (Florida Keys reef tract, Biscayne Bay, Florida Bay and the Everglades).

The school operates a fleet of small boats, the Broad Key field station and an ocean-going research vessel.  On campus, students have access to the Marine Technology & Life Sciences Complex and Experimental Hatchery and Aplysia Facility which make it possible for students to work with a wide range of organisms under controlled conditions and study their behavior and physiological responses to short and long-term biological, chemical and climate manipulations.

MBE offers PhD and MSc degrees as well as professional master’s degrees in Marine Mammal Science and Tropical Ecosystem Management.  MBE faculty teach in the undergraduate Marine Sciences BSc program.

We encourage you to explore our Department’s web pages to learn more about our faculty, research and academic programs.
